Late last year, the avian flu virus was confirmed in birds in 16 countries. It had infected 122 people, half of whom died as a result.

Today, four months later, the virus has spread to 42 nations, and of the 186 infected people, 105 have died.

"We're in a race. We are in a race against a fast moving virulent virus with the potential to cause an influenza pandemic," says Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt.

The problem facing us today is that bird flu is highly likely to mutate into a human-to-human strain at any time. "The only question is when," says Margaret Chan, chief of influenza pandemic preparedness at the World Health Organization (WHO).

The question in Belize is WHEN they are going to get serious and plan for the arrival of this terrible sickness …. But then one wonders if our present cabinet in the government really cares if the people get sick!!!
